Supply List and Class Rules

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

All art and graphic design assignments are project-based. Assignments are given adequate time so students should have no problem finishing projects in the art classroom or graphic design lab. Students are not expected to have specialized art materials or software programs at home to complete projects. However, students are expected to use their time wisely. I am always available during department days and before and after school if students need extra time to complete projects. The Carroll lab, Publication lab and Library are equipped with the necessary software for graphics assignments
We as a class went over the class expectations, rules and grading. Sheets with this information were sent home the first week of classes to be signed by the parent/guardian.
The information below is what you can expect your student to be completing during the spring semester, 2013.
Unless otherwise noted in the gradebook, all projects for all classes are graded on a 100 pt scale. When included with a project, Idea sketches are worth 20 points, artist statements are worth 25 points.

Art Foundations

Students start the semester by designing a symmetrical name.
The rest of the projects scheduled for the first quarter include:
Block Print Collage: This project includes a study in proportion making a block print letter. Students will use paint to transfer the letter to a final paper and design a collage to frame it. Featured artist: David Pelletier’s Graphic Alphabet designs.
Pop-Art: This project focuses on symmetry, repeated patterns and color combinations. Featured artists: Andy Warhol and Wayne Thiedbaud
Pen and Ink: This project focuses on using pattern and design to create a 3-d effect on a 2-d surface. Students will be re-designing their own shoe.
What to expect 2nd quarter: Still life drawing, chalk pastel landscapes, clay and a mixed media project.

Ceramics

Students start the semester by creating Letter Design tiles. The final project will be painted with acrylics.
All project are graded three ways. 1st, the project sketch is worth 20 points. Projects are graded once before firing (greenware) and then as a finished piece. In the event a project is destroyed in the firing process, the greenware grade will be or the student can choose to recreate the piece.
Footed mini-pots : Students will create using the pinch method. Project will be painted
Greek Vases : Students will create using the coil method. Project will be glazed.
Boxes : Students will create using the slab method. Project will be glazed.
Slump Pot : Students will create using a combo of coils and slabs. Students will build forms to drape clay over. Project will be glazed.
What to expect 2nd quarter: Matching Sets, Two-tone pots, nature pot, and clay plus projects.
Ceramics added note: Projects are put on JMC is succession (ie, tile sketch, tile green (not fired yet), tile finish.) However, we often start another project before one is finished. Often it will look like a student is “missing” a project when, in fact, we have not finished it yet. If you have any questions on grading, do not hesitate to email me at seckerh@mail.assumption.pvt.k12.ia.us.

Drawing and Painting

Students start the semester by designing and drawing a shoe design for Vans Shoes.
The rest of the projects scheduled for the first quarter include:
Op-Art: This project focuses on balance, symmetry and complementary colors. Featured artist: Peter Max
Co-Existence Posters: This project provides the opportunity to make a social statement using images and words. Students will discuss the meaning of Co-existence and the need to get along in society.
Featured artwork: The Co-existence billboard exhibit which toured the Quad Cities in 2007.
Self Portraits : This project includes a study in proportion and shading with charcoals/pastels.
Featured artist: Frida Kahlo
What to expect 2nd quarter: tessellations, painting the ordinary-extraordinary, 2-point perspective & creating art from recycled/ objects.

Advanced Studio Art I

Students will work in an independent study mode. The semester project list includes creating eight pieces of art in at least five chosen mediums. Students may choose from various materials including pencil, pen and ink, markers, charcoals, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, clay, computer generated, photography and mixed media. Students will be responsible for sketching out ideas for each project , creating the pieces, and writing an artist statement for each. Finals projects will be captured electronically and recording on their secure drive. Electronic portfolio CD will be created in CD form or saved on a flash drive for students to keep at the end of the semester
