The social studies department teaches World Civilizations, U.S.  History, American Government, AP American Government & Politics, Sociology, Psychology, Current Issues, and Law in American Society. Three years of social studies are required for graduation. These classes teach students about the history and current functioning of societies across the planet.


Dave Simpson is starting his 19th year on the AHS faculty and is a 1982 alum. He teaches Psychology, AP U.S. History, U.S. History and is the Mock Trial advisor. Dave and his wife, Carol, belong to St. Paul’s Parish and have three children, one at St. Paul’s, one at AHS, and one at St. Ambrose.

Bob Matthys, a 1986 graduate of AHS, is in his 3rd year as part of Assumption’s Social Studies Department. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also serves as the head coach for Varsity Softball and assistant for the Varsity Football team at Assumption. Bob has five children, Alex, and Hannah at AHS, and Maddy, Molly, and Nick at All Saints.

Leslie LaCorte is in her 7th year teaching Social Studies at AHS and directing the Drama/Theater program. Leslie is married to Dan, a history professor at St. Ambrose University, and has three children: Helena, Isobel, and Peter.
