2017 Season in Review: Softball

The 2017 softball season was one for the ages as the team compiled the best season in school-history and won AHS’s first Iowa Class 3A State Tournament title. The Knights set a new school-record for wins (44) and topped the 2016 team’s 41-game winning streak by winning their last 44 games in a row.

After finishing runner-up at state a year ago, Assumption dominated its competition throughout the 2017 campaign. The Knights outscored their opponents by a total of 380-26 runs, including a 55-1 margin over postseason foes, and went undefeated (18-0) against Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) opponents on the way to the program’s first league championship.

Seniors Nicole Timmons and Emma Valainis, along with 2017 MAC Player of the Year junior Hannah Kelly, were named Class 3A First Team All-State by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA), while senior Sophie VanSeveren and junior Hannah Wislander were voted Second Team All-State, and current freshman Olivia Wardlow was a Third Team All-State honoree. Timmons, Valainis, and VanSeveren were all named to the Class 3A All-Iowa Team by the Des Moines Register, while Head Coach Ron Ferrill was named Coach of the Year by the Des Moines Register, the IGCA, and the MAC Coaches.
