2017 Season in Review: Baseball

The 2017 Assumption Baseball season was also one for the record books, with the Knights breaking through for a state record-setting 10th state title. Behind aces Trenton Wallace, Ben Beutel, and Daniel Powers, the Knights dominated their competition from start to finish, capping the season with a 10-1 win over Harlan in the Iowa Class 3A State Tournament Championship on August 29 at Principal Park in Des Moines. Read more

The Knights gave Head Coach Billy Argo his 500th career coaching victory on July 11, while also enjoying winning streaks of five, nine, 10, and 16 games, en route to an overall record of 41-5. In conference play, the Knights went 16-2 on the way to their second straight MAC title, and 16th league banner all-time.

For the second straight season, Wallace, now pitching for the University of Iowa, was named to the IHSBCA Super Team, and was also voted First Team All-State by the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) and the Des Moines Register. Wallace was also named to the Des Moines Register’s Elite Team, and was tabbed Mississippi Athletic Conference Player of the Year, as well as Quad-City Times All-Metro Captain for the second year in a row.

2017 graduate Tavien Gillette (catcher) was named to the IHSBCA’s Super Team and the Register’s All-Iowa Elite Team, while fellow seniors Beutel (pitcher) and Justus Burke (outfield) also earned All-Iowa distinction from the Des Moines Register.
