There are approximately 15 different performance opportunities as soloists or part of the AHS Choir in 2026-2027. Concert Choir teaches sight-singing and musicianship through study of quality choral literature from various musical styles and time periods. Every student learns to improve their music literacy skills and understand basic and advanced musical concepts.
Throughout the academic year, the choir presents 2 concert events, performs at the Festival of Trees, records Christmas music with KWQC, serves as music ministers at all school Masses, and performs the National Anthem for pep rallies and select athletic events. The members of the choir participate in the IHSMA All-State, Vocal Jazz, Solo/Ensemble, and Large Group Festivals, as well as the ICDA Opus Honor Choir. Singers are regularly selected to participate in Luther College’s Dorian Vocal Festival, Wartburg College’s Meistersinger Honor Choir, and some have been selected to participate in an ACDA conference honor choir. In addition to the curricular choir, students have the option to participate in an extra-curricular vocal jazz ensemble, which has earned 4 Division 1 ratings at the IHSMA Jazz Choir Festival in the last 6 years.
Singers have been selected to the ICDA 9th Grade Opus Honor Choir for 7 consecutive years, and have been accepted to the IHSMA All-State Chorus for 6 consecutive years. The choir has earned a Superior Division 1 rating at the IHSMA Large Group Festival for 11 consecutive years. Music and drama travel each year to see a professional musical theater performance, and the music department takes a longer performance trip every 2-3 years. Recent trips have included NYC, Milwaukee, Kansas City, St. Louis, and the Twin Cities. The choir has had the opportunity to sing for Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary in St. Paul, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City, and the Shrine of St. Joseph in St. Louis. The choir has asked to collaborate in concert with the Central College A Cappella Choir on 2 occasions, as well as the Luther College Nordic Choir.
