There are over 30 different performance opportunities as soloists or part of the AHS Choir in 2017-2018. Concert Choir teaches sight-singing and musicianship through study of quality choral literature from various musical styles and time periods. Every student learns to read music and understand basic and advanced musical concepts. Each student is provided a private lesson every week to develop their individual vocal skills and music literacy.
Throughout the academic year, the choir presents 4 concerts, sings for weekend Mass at 4 local parishes, participates in the IHSMA Solo/Ensemble and Large Group Festivals, performs at the Festival of Trees, serves as music ministers at various school Masses, and performs the National Anthem for pep rallies and select athletic events. In addition, interested students prepare for the Iowa All-State Choir auditions, participate in Metrofest with other Scott County high schools, and sing in 5 different honor choirs throughout the year. The choir earned a Superior “I” rating at Large Group Festival in 2017. In addition to the curricular choir, students have the option to participate in the co-curricular Jazz Choir that meets three days a week after school and gives about 4 performances a year. The music and theater departments take a trip each year to see a professional musical theater performance, and the music department takes a longer performance trip every 2-3 years. Recent trips have included the opportunity for the choir to sing for Sunday Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary in St. Paul, MN, attending professional musical performances, and participating in performance clinics with collegiate choirs.
