The band students have had a busy season of honor bands and festivals!
In January, students participated in the University of Dubuque Honor Band, the MAC Honor Band, and the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) Honor Bands.
The University of Dubuque Honor Band took place on January 17. The students performed a great concert under the direction of Dr. Nolan Hauta and Dr. Evan Glickman, directors of band at University of Dubuque. Students participating in the University of Dubuque Honor Band were Olivia Fernando – Flute, Miriam Schwartz – Flute, Ellie Weyeneth – Clarinet, Alex Hady – Trumpet, Ethan Furgason – Trombone, Evan Wilson – Euphonium, and Ben Bates – Percussion.
The next weekend on January 20, students participated in the MAC Honor Band, hosted at Central DeWitt High School. The 9-10 band was directed by Dr. Rob Stull from Clarke University and the 11-12 band was directed by Dr. William Carson from Coe College. Students involved in the 9-10 band were Em Wermes – Flute, Miriam Schwartz – Flute, Adrian Gonzalez – Clarinet, Natalie Herrman – Alto Sax, Joseph Ngo – Tenor Saxophone, Ethan Furgason – Trombone, and Evan Wilson – Euphonium. Students involved in the 11-12 band were Olivia Fernando – Flute, Dale Cabrera – Clarinet, Ellie Weyeneth – Clarinet, Carter Nelson – Alto Sax, Renin Gray – Bari Saxophone, Alex Hady – Trumpet, and Ben Bates – Percussion.
We had two students audition for the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) Honor Band, and Evan Wilson made it on euphonium! He performed at the University of Iowa Voxman School of Music under the direction of Dr. Mike Fansler from Western Illinois University.
Then, on February 22-23, we had 5 students participate in the University of Iowa Honor Band. Olivia Fernando – Flute, Ellie Weyeneth – Clarinet, Natalie Herrman – Alto Saxophone, Ethan Furgason – Trombone, and Evan Wilson- Trombone participated. Ellie was in the Voxman Band, under the direction of Dr. Timothy Mahr from St. Olaf College, and Olivia, Natalie, Ethan, and Evan were in the Welch Band, under the direction of Dr. Mark Heidel and Dr. Eric Bush from the University of Iowa.
Additionally, the Assumption Symphonic Band performed at the Guy Blair All Iowa Concert Band Festival at Central DeWitt High School on February 18, where they got feedback from Dr. Frank Tracz from Kansas State University, Dr. Elizabeth Peterson from the University of Illinois, Jeffrey Hinton from Missouri Western State University, and Dr. Michael Golemo from Iowa State University. They got to work with Dr. Catherine Rand from Southern Mississippi University and she gave valuable feedback and helped the band improve their pieces they are working on towards Iowa Large Group Contest in May.
The Assumption Jazz Knights performed at the University of Northern Iowa Tallcorn Jazz Festival on February 20 and got a clinic from Dr. Gordon Vernick, director of Jazz Studies at Georgia State University.

Join the Assumption Choir this Sunday, Feb. 16th for the 8:30 am Mass at Our Lady of the River, 28200 226th St. Pl, LeClaire, IA.
Seven Assumption Choir members were selected to participate in the 2025 Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College on Jan. 12th and 13th. Six of the students also participated in private voice lessons with a voice professor, which made them eligible to be a solo finalist for the Grand Concert. Earning honorable mention for her solo was Katelyn O’Brien ‘25, and listed as a semi-finalist was Geno DelPreore ’25. The Dorian Vocal Festival is the largest select high school honor choir in the country with nearly 1,000 junior/senior student singers from over 200 high schools and five states.
Congrats to IHSMA All-State Chorus Members
Eleven Assumption Choir students auditioned for the Iowa All-State Chorus, and four were selected. That represents the most students ever accepted to the chorus from Assumption in a single year. The SE District of Iowa is dominated by Class 4A schools, but Assumption was 1 of 4 Class 3A schools represented, and the only private school from the SE district to be represented in the chorus. The singers include Katelyn O’Brien (Senior-2nd year), Tristen Gray (Senior-2nd year), Alyssa Knepel (Senior-1st year), and Claire Eby (Junior-1st year).

Join the Assumption Choir for Mass this Sunday, Dec. 15th for Mass at Our Lady of the River, 28200 226th Street Pl, Le Claire. The Mass begins at 8:30, and the choir will begin singing at 8:20.
Assumption Choir to Present Christmas Concert
Please join the Assumption Choir this Monday, Dec. 16th for their Christmas Concert. The program will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 422 E. 10th St., Davenport at 7:00 pm. The program is free and will feature A guest brass players.

Enjoy one of the most enduring shows of all time with an eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville. Join the celebration of kindness, tolerance, and friendship! Shows are at Assumption’s Sunderbruch Auditorium, 1020 W Central Park Ave, Davenport. Performances are Friday, December 6 at 6:30 PM and Saturday, December 7 at 2 PM and 6:30 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for Children and senior citizens, and $8 for students without an activity pass. Cash and check accepted at the door.
Congratulations to the following students accepted to the 2024 ICDA Opus Honor Choir: Caroline Brown, Henrick Senne, and Natalie Stombaugh from Assumption High School (9th Grade Choir), Caitlyn Creech from John F. Kennedy School (7/8 Treble Choir), and Macy Connell from Lourdes Catholic School (5/6 Choir). The Opus Festival takes place on Thursday, November 21 at CY Stephens Auditorium on the campus of Iowa State University. Way to go, singers!
