Ripslinger Caps Career in Victory Lane

Assumption Track & Field standout and recent graduate Joy Ripslinger ’17 finished out her illustrious high school career in style during the 2017 Iowa State Co-Ed Track Meet, where the University of Arkansas recruit captivated the crowd with victories in four events, including three new Iowa Class 3A Meet records.

She began her assault on the record books with an impressive come from behind win in the 3,000 M Run, setting a new Class 3A record time of 9:55.37. She followed that up with a championship performance in the 400 M Run, where she edged out teammate Carly King for the 3A title. The next day saw Ripslinger set new 3A marks in both the 800 M and 1500 M Runs, making her the first individual in state meet history to win the 400, 800, 1500, and 3000 M races in one year.

Ripslinger also joined some elite company at the 2017 Drake Relays, becoming just the third girl to win the 800 M and 1,500 M events in the same year at Drake. Her dual victories earned her the 2017 Drake Relays Gerry Cooley Award, presented to the Relays’ most outstanding female high school senior.

Ripslinger finishes her decorated track & field career with 16 state medals, including nine state titles and five runner-ups, along with seven Drake Relays titles and four team state titles.

Following the high school season, she was named the Iowa Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year and the Des Moines Register’s Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Ripslinger competed in the prestigious Adidas Boston Dream Mile earlier this month, and recently capped off her high school career with a personal best and fifth place finish in the 800 M race at the 2017 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Sacramento.

2017 Season in Review: Girls Track & Field

The Assumption Girls Track & Field program made state history with its fifth consecutive Iowa Class 3A State Girls Track & Field Championship, becoming the first program in the 56-year history of the state meet to claim five straight championships. Powered by senior Joy Ripslinger’s four individual titles and two runner-up finishes by sophomore Carly King, Assumption topped second place Pella 93-77 in overall points.

At the 2017 Drake Relays, the Lady Knights claimed three more coveted white flags for the trophy case, as Ripslinger won both the 800 and 1500 M races, and AHS topped the field in the 4 x 100 M Relay behind the efforts of Jasmine Harris, Carly King, Lea Nelson and Mary Grace Carroll. For the second straight year, Assumption was named the Drake Relays Hy-Vee Cup Champions, earning the distinction of the top high school girls track program in Iowa.

At the 2017 New Balance Outdoor National Championships in Greensboro, NC, Harris, Nelson, King and Ripslinger clocked a time of 3 minutes, 55.74 seconds in the 1600-meter medley, setting a new all-time Iowa best. Assumption’s time was the fourth fastest time in the country this season, earning the quartet All-American honors.
