Literary Guild
Assumption Literary Guild
Reading literature that supplements the required literary curriculum is a valuable extension of student learning. The Assumption Literary Guild allows students the opportunity to strengthen their reading abilities and enjoyment of reading through guided instruction that is both fun and functional.
Students wishing to participate in the Assumption Literary Guild may select books that interest them from a diverse list (provided by each English teacher). After reading a book, the student must set up a time to meet with the book’s assigned teacher during his or her office hours. (Students should email the teacher in advance to set up a date & time.)
The teacher and student will then conference together, one-on-one, and the student will be prompted with both specific and open-ended questions. Once the five-to-ten-minute conference is finished, the teacher will inform the student whether or not his or her conference has demonstrated knowledge of and engagement with the novel and earned a passing mark; if so, she will record one point for the book.
As of 2020/2021, each book conference is worth one point. (Note: Book conferences from 2017-2020 have been “grandfathered in” at their former value of 1, 2, or 3 points.)
Students who have earned three points by the May 1st of their senior year will be recognized at the Senior Honors and Awards ceremony as members of the guild! Seniors who have read 10+ books will be recognized as “distinguished members.” The senior with the most points will be recognized as “president” of the guild with a special certificate.
Assumption Literary Guild:
- Club Member (3+ books)
- Distinguished Member (10+ books)
- Highest Score (by grade) = GUILD PRESIDENT!

Sacred Heart St. Martin de Porres Society Black History Month Essay Contest
Please see below information regarding the Sacred Heart Cathedral St. Martin de Porres Society Black History Month Essay Contest. This is a wonderful opportunity for all Assumption students to learn about highly courageous and influential leaders throughout history. Please consider submitting an essay, as all Assumption students in grades 9-12 are eligible for gift card prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. SHC-SMD Black History Month Essay Contest – AHS Feb 2021

Black History Month 2021 – Essay Contest
Students are asked to select a Black historical figure, and demonstrate through a minimum 500 word essay, the importance of the contributions and impact that this individual had on Black History as well as society in general.
Essays will be judged as follows:
- Uses Student’s Own Voice
- Did the essay demonstrate the individual’s contribution to or impact on Black History & society in general?
- Does the essay contain sufficient information on the subject?
- Originality, Writing Style, Grammar and meeting the minimum expectation of length will also be considered.
Essays should be submitted via email (as an attached Word document) to St.Martin@assumptionhigh.org on or before 11:59pm on Sunday, March 7, 2021. Winners will be announced by March 22, 2021.
All students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate. A $50 gift card will be awarded for 1st Place, $30 gift card for 2nd Place and $20 gift card for 3rd Place.
Service Hours
A lady in the Assumption neighborhood is looking for help in getting her walks and driveway cleared of snow. She would need the help as soon as possible. Please contact Mrs. Imborek, Mrs. Quested in Student Services or Mrs. Miller in the Front Office for details.

Athene Game Changers Scholarship
The Athene USA Game Changer Scholars program is designed to support Black, African American, Latino, Latina, Latinx and Hispanic students in reaching their educational goals. This program will award $40,000 in scholarships through twenty individual scholarships at $2,000 level on an annual basis.
Junior Parents – Looking for Junior Retreat Desserts
We are looking for donations of desserts for the Junior Retreat on Friday, February 5th, at Sacred Heart Cathedral. We are asking for Junior parent volunteers. Dessert donations can be sent with your junior student on the morning of the retreat (Friday, February 5th). If you have a container you would like returned, please remember to label it.
