ASSUMPTION’S ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM EARNS TOP HONORS AT REGIONALS!

We are proud to announce an amazing performance by our Academic Decathlon team at the recent Regional Academic Decathlon competition.

Our team competed at Grundy Center High School against strong schools from across Iowa, demonstrating exceptional academic skill, teamwork, and dedication & earning 2nd place overall in the Small Schools category!

Declan Murphy, Noah Fetterer, Elijah Milton, Evan Wilson, and Natalie Stombaugh competed in the Honors category. Ryan Bang and Devin Diaz competed in the Scholastic category, & Trevor Gray and King Goodwin competed in the Varsity category. Our cumulative team scores resulted in an outstanding 2nd -place finish!

Several students also received individual medals for their achievements:

Honors

  • Declan Murphy earned Gold medals in Econ and Mathematics and Silver in Literature.

Scholastic

  • Ryan Bang earned Bronze medals in Econ and Silver in Math.
  • Devin Diaz earned a Bronze medal in Science.

Varsity

  • Trevor Gray earned Bronze medals in Mathematics, Music, and Social Studies as well as a Silver medal in Science. He also earned the Bronze Overall Award in his category!
  • King Goodwin earned Gold medals in Social Studies and Interview, and Silver in Econ.

These results reflect our members’ dedication to the team, strong preparation efforts, and commitment to academic excellence. Congratulations to all of our Academic Decathlon team members for representing our school with distinction and pride!

  • Run Food to Servers’ Sections: Deliver orders promptly and accurately from the kitchen to designated server sections.
  • Follow DCC’s Policies and Procedures
  • Coordinate with Expo: Work closely with the expo to ensure orders are prepared and delivered correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain Cleanliness: Keep server stations clean and organized by promptly clearing dishes, trash, and other items.
  • Knowledge of Food Presentations: Understand the presentation standards for each menu item to maintain consistent quality.

Musicians Represent School in Honor Band Performance

The Assumption Band has had a busy honor band season! First, on January 16, we had six students participate in the University of Dubuque Honor Band under the direction of Dr. Nolan Hauta. The students who participated were Olivia Fernando – Flute, Ellie Weyeneth – Clarinet, Natalie Herrman – Alto Saxophone, Alex Hady – Trumpet, Ethan Furgason – Trombone, and Evan Wilson – Euphonium.

Then, on Monday, January 19 was the Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) Honor Band at Central DeWitt High School! We had 18 students participate between two bands. The 9th and 10th grade bands were under the direction of retired band director Michael Omarzu from Western Dubuque High School and retired band director Steve Stickney from Mount Mercy University. The students who participated were Caitlyn Creech – Euphonium, Derek Creech – Trombone, Dylan Creech – Tuba, Devin Diaz – Percussion, Faithlyn Fernando – Clarinet, Olivia Fernando – Flute, Ethan Furgason – Trombone, Jonah Goldsmith – Percussion, Adrian Gonzalez – Clarinet, Renin Gray – Alto Saxophone, Alex Hady – Trumpet, Natalie Herrman – Alto Saxophone, Laisha Lopez – Trumpet, Max Nicoletto – Percussion, Micah Schilling – Trumpet, Em Wermes – Flute, Ellie Weyeneth – Clarinet, and Evan Wilson – Euphonium.

Finally, Evan Wilson was selected on Euphonium for the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) Honor Band on January 24th at the Voxman Music Building on the campus of the University of Iowa. Not only was Evan selected, but he made first chair! Evan was under the direction of conductor Brad Lampe from Central College.
