Assumption High School is pleased to announce the promotion of 1999 graduate Greg Thissen to Head Baseball Coach. A two-time First Team All-State selection (1998, 1999), Thissen has been an Assistant Coach at his alma mater since 2012.
As a prep, he helped lead the Knights to the 1999 Iowa Class 3A state title before continuing his career at Iowa Central Community College (one year), and Triton Junior College in River Forest, IL, where he was a Third Team Junior College All-American.
Thissen was selected in the 8th round (232nd overall) of the 2001 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Montreal Expos (now Washington Nationals) and went on to play for 7 seasons in the minor leagues, reaching as high as AAA, before finishing his playing career in 2007.
Thissen currently works as a Student Support Liaison with the Davenport Community School District. He and his wife, Anna ’99, have three children, Keaton, Cooper and Everly.
The Knights baseball program owns an Iowa state record 11 summer baseball state tournament championships and are coming off their second straight Iowa Class 3A state title and a 34-10 season.
There will be a quick meeting for all girls interested in playing girls basketball on Wednesday, September 5th immediately after school in Coach Mac’s room. A max-out lifting session for out-of-season female athletes will be held on Thursday, September 6th after school. Any players unable to attend the meeting or lifting session should see Coach Mac.
There will be a retirement celebration honoring Coach Billy Argo this Friday, August 31st at Rookies starting at 6:00 p.m. Coach Argo would love to see as many former players and fans of the program as possible.
