Teacher Luncheon for Catholic Schools Week – Sophomore Parents

During Catholic Schools Week, Knight Network will provide lunch for our faculty and staff on Wednesday, February 1st. We are asking help from Sophomore parents for this event. Knight Network funds will be used to purchase lunch, but we are asking for donations of water and desserts. They can be dropped off in the Assumption Front Office Tuesday, January 31, between 7:30 and 3:30 or Wednesday morning after 7 am (Luncheon begins at 11). Thanks so much for your help and support of our hard-working school employees through the Knight Network parent organization!

Honor Band News

Assumption High School Band had a very busy week with participants at 3 different area honor bands! On Monday, January 16, 17 students were selected for the MAC Conference Honor Band, held at Central DeWitt High School. 8 out of 10 schools in the MAC were represented. Students rehearsed in 2 bands, one for 9-10 grade and one for 11-12 grade. The 9-10 grade band was directed by Mrs. Jennifer Williams, director of bands and Ankeny High School, and the 11-12 band was directed by Dr. Duane Bierman, director of bands at University of Nebraska-Kearney. Students selected for the 9-10 grade band were Olivia Fernando – Flute, Elisabeth Weyeneth – Clarinet, Geno DelPreore – Alto Saxophone, Alex Hady – Trumpet, and Ben Bates – Percussion. Students selected for the 11-12 band were Alison Byrne – Flute, Bianca Connelly – Flute, Michael Lochner – Clarinet, Kristen Byrne – Clarinet, Maggie Burchett – Clarinet, Tatyana DelPreore – Contra Alto Clarinet, Leah Wilson – Trumpet, Grace Hagerman – Trumpet, Lindsey Gerlach – Trombone, AJ Barry – Euphonium, Nathan Roman – Tuba, and Anna Schuster – Percussion.

On Friday, January 20, 10 Assumption students participated in the University of Dubuque Honor Band. Students rehearsed under the direction of Dr. Nolan Hauta and Dr. Evan Glickman of the University of Dubuque. Students from 3 states participated. At the honor band concert on Friday night, 4 Assumption students were presented with music scholarships to the University of Dubuque! Students receiving scholarships were Grace Hagerman, David Lochner, Michael Lochner, and Anna Schuster. Students participating in the University of Dubuque Honor Band were Michael Lochner – Clarinet, Elisabeth Weyeneth – Clarinet, Grace Hagerman – Trumpet, David Lochner – Trombone, Lindsey Gerlach – Trombone, AJ Barry – Euphonium, Tatyana DelPreore – Contra Alto Clarinet, Adie Craig – Percussion, Anna Schuster – Percussion, and Noah Whitlock – Percussion.

Finally, Michael Lochner, auditioned and was selected on clarinet for the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) Honor Band, held at the Voxman School of Music on the campus of the University of Iowa. The SEIBA High School Honor Band was under the director of Dr. Mark Heidel, director of bands at the University of Iowa. Students rehearsed all day and performed an outstanding concert that night.

AHS 8th Grade Parent Meeting – Wednesday, January 25th

Our annual 8th grade parent meeting will be held January 25, 2023 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the AHS Sunderbruch Auditorium. The meeting is open to all families of current 8th graders who are interested in attending Assumption High School for the 2023-2024 school year. The meeting will provide opportunities to meet with administration, athletics, fine arts, student services, and the business office. How are you connected to AHS?
I first came to AHS as a student teacher working with Dave Simpson. After that, I was fortunate enough to be hired by AHS, and here I am 5 years later!

What do you love most about working at Assumption?
I have fantastic colleagues, great students, and Chick-fil-A lunches. That’s a pretty tough combination to beat.

What are some things you enjoy doing in your free time?

Honestly, most of my free time is devoted to being a dad, and I’m perfectly okay with that.

What advice or encouragement do you have to share with current and future students?

As my grandfather used to say, “If a turtle’s on a fence post, somebody put him there.”
No one succeeds entirely on their own. Take time to appreciate the people who help you along the way, your family, teachers, friends, coaches, and mentors. As you grow and find success, remember to be that person for someone else.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
Sirach 7:18 — “Do not barter a friend for money, nor a true brother for the gold of Ophir.”

How are you connected to AHS?

Our first connection to Assumption High School began when 8-year-old Daniel Murphy would come over with his neighborhood friends to play in our tree house with our daughter, Ellie Weyeneth. Having the Murphy family in our neighborhood and multiple neighbors who also attended Catholic Elementary Schools and Assumption High School (Taylor’s, Devries’, Graw’s gave us a positive experience with the Catholic Education community. Through high school choice, Ellie toured various local high schools and was accepted into the Davenport North High School Dual Enrollment Program and North Scott High School, although a faith-based education was at the top of our list. As the Admissions Counselor for Trinity Lutheran School, I encouraged students to attend the 8th-grade school visit at Assumption High School. Ellie and four of her classmates enjoyed the welcoming shadow experience, talk session with AHS students, and pizza lunch. As her parents, we greatly appreciated the faith-filled curriculum and the course planning session. Together, we knew that AHS was the right fit. And we have been so grateful for the people we have met and for those we have known for a while, yet continued to grow closer. We were prepared to be busy, productive, and supportive of the school’s mission. What we were not prepared for was how wonderful the experience would be and how fast it would go. Sitting on the other side of graduation, we smile when we think about our family’s time at AHS. Coming from a military family, we have shared AHS with multiple incoming families and will continue doing so at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Why did you choose an Assumption education for your students?

Education is more than memorizing facts, pondering theories, and learning new skills in activities that surface hidden talents. The high school years are formative in developing students who carry forward aptitude, gratitude, and compassion by leading with a moral compass to impact others. At Assumption High School, students are motivated to make a difference by living out their faith in daily service. Whether that is through discussions in theology class, singing in the choir at mass, participating in activities or sports, or parents supporting teachers and students through volunteer efforts, a faith-based education connects all of these endeavors to building a community of support for students and their families. Growing together in faith, knowledge, and character equips students to go out into the world, make a difference, and leave it better than they found it. We have found this to be true in admiring the students who have gone through AHS prior to our daughter attending and in her testimony throughout these past four years. We chose Assumption High School for the purpose of having a faith-based educational journey experience.

What advice or encouragement do you have to share with current and future students and families?

  • Ellie: Get involved in as many activities as you can right at the start of freshman year. The more interests, the wider the variety of connections and friends.
  • Parents: Care more about what your teachers think than what your peers think of you. Character will carry you through every time.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

  • Ellie: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
  • Parents:  “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.

What is your favorite academic subject/class?

My favorite class is Spanish because I enjoy learning about the language and different cultures while building communication skills I can use in my future.

What are some things you enjoy doing outside of the classroom?

Outside of school, I enjoy playing video games, biking, and traveling. I like exploring new places, spending time outdoors, and relaxing with friends and family.

What do you love most about being an Assumption student?

What I love most about being an Assumption student is the close-knit community. Everyone knows and supports each other, which makes the school feel welcoming and connected.

What advice or encouragement do you have to share with younger students?

Get involved as much as possible, try new activities, and don’t be afraid to meet new people. The friendships and memories you make through clubs and after-school activities can make your high school experience even better.

What are some of your future plans, hopes, and dreams?

In the future, I hope to attend college, travel to new places, and build a happy and successful life doing something I enjoy.
