2021 Century Club Membership and Steak Fry

Dear Assumption Family and Friends,

We would like to invite you to become a member of this year’s Assumption Century Club. All Century Club Members are invited to our Annual Steak Fry on Friday, August 13. Cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Assumption Courtyard between the gym and the auditorium. This event is free to all Century Club Members. This event has been a great Assumption tradition for well over thirty (30) years and a fun way to kick off the upcoming seasons for all sports programs.

The Century Club’s sole mission is to provide financial assistance to the AHS girls’ and boys’ athletic programs. Each year the Century Club helps support all of our team sports by funding new equipment, special projects and facility improvements. Typically, the Century Club provides in excess of $20,000.00 in financial assistance to Assumption’s Athletic Programs on an annual basis.

Our AHS Athletic Programs enjoyed continued success this past 2020 – 2021 school year. Last year we had what I will call “The Year of COVID 19” where all sports were affected by the pandemic in some fashion and some had no season at all. However, AHS Athletic Programs were still able to find success and that success carried over to this year too. The volleyball team made it to State, girls and boys basketball teams made it to State, and the girls soccer team won its 9th State title over the last 10 years. In addition, as of this writing the softball team just won the MAC conference title and have punched their ticket to State! Numerous other AHS programs and individual athletes also had outstanding seasons this past year. Your membership dues directly assist our athletes with accomplishing these amazing achievements.

PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A CENTURY CLUB MEMBER. The “Century” in our name signifies the amount of the annual dues – $100.00. However, a growing number of AHS supporters are choosing to become “Gold Members” for $200.00. Membership dues are TAX DEDUCTIBLE*.

We strive to have a broad base of support across the AHS community, so either amount is greatly appreciated. To become a member of the Century Club, we ask that you complete the attached CENTURY CLUB MEMBERSHIP FORM and return the completed form, along with your dues, to: Assumption High School, Attention: Century Club, 1020 West Central Park Avenue, Davenport, Iowa 52804. Checks should be made payable to “AHS Century Club”. If you have a student, you can elect to pay your dues as part of your school registration. Please see Membership Form for online payment option (convenience fee charged) as well!

As in the past, we will be raffling off some great prizes at the Steak Fry. Raffle tickets are available for purchase — 1 for $10, 3 for $25 or 8 for $50 by indicating your preference on the Membership Form.

Thank you for your support of our strong athletic tradition at Assumption!

IHSAA/IGHSAU 2021 Family Week for Athletes

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union have an upcoming “Family Week” appearing in Iowa’s Unified Activity Federation calendar for the first time in 2020-21. This week will prohibit any coach and/or teacher contact with student-athletes and prohibits any IHSAA or IGHSAU event from occurring.

This non-contact period will run from Sunday, July 25, 2021 through Sunday, August 1, 2021. Those dates have been approved and listed on the Unified Activity Calendar throughout the 2020-21 athletic year, and they coincide with week 3 and week 4 of the NFHS calendar.

“Both the IHSAA and IGHSAU strongly support the introduction of ‘Family Week’ into our schedules,” IHSAA executive director Tom Keating said.

“This will provide a built-in break for everyone involved in Iowa high school athletics — participants, parents, coaches, officials, and school administrators – and an opportunity to prioritize family, friends, rest, and activities away from sports,” IGHSAU executive director Jean Berger said.

The IHSAA’s 2021 state baseball tournament will be exempt from this year’s non-contact period. Future state baseball tournaments will have updated schedules to allow for the off week before the start of the next athletic year.

There can be no athletic activities within IHSAA and IGHSAU member schools during that week. All high school students, including incoming ninth graders, are covered under the non-contact period. Contact with coaches is not to occur on or off school premises. The use of school facilities is prohibited during the eight-day period.

In summary: No intentional or scheduled contact between any student-athlete and coach from their school at any place, at any time, and for any purpose during the prohibited period.

Iowa’s Unified Activity Federation is comprised of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Iowa High School Music Association, and the Iowa High School Speech Association.

Fresh Start Picnic – Thursday, July 1, 2021

I hope everyone has started to enjoy summer—it’s a much-needed break from such an unusual school year!  Plus, I’m sure your children are excited to end their grade school days!

Earlier this spring, we sent out a postcard with a couple of upcoming events for registered incoming freshmen.  As a reminder, the Fresh Start Picnic is rescheduled for Thursday, July 1st.  We will serve Hungry Hobo sandwiches, drinks, and treats.  There will also be a few games and activities—rain or shine.  (If there is inclement weather, we will hold the picnic inside in the cafeteria.)

Students can begin checking in at 1:00 near the tennis courts at the back of the main parking lot.  If it’s raining, please drop your students off around back at the main student entrance between the gym and the auditorium.  The picnic will end at 3:00, however, we invite all the incoming freshmen to stay for the varsity baseball double-header starting at 3:00 (weather permitting).

In order to make an accurate order for food and drinks, we would kindly appreciate your student’s RSVP by Monday, June 28th at the latest.  (I will send out a reminder email as that day draws closer.)  Additionally, we ask that you verify your child’s t-shirt size in case it has changed since filling out the Assumption application for admission.

Enjoy the rest of your June, and we hope to see your student at the Fresh Start Picnic!  (Pray for good weather!)
